I regularly check John Goodman's Healthpolicy Blog. I offered my comments on Goodman's post on April 18th, Healthcare Without Health Insurance centered around a Los Angeles Times Op/Ed written by Dr. Albert Fuchs of Beverly Hills, CA.
Eliminating the middleman, as Dr. Fuchs refers to insurance companies, is a little misplaced. Eliminating the network contracts, which set prices paid to doctors and hospitals for their services, is what he really seeks. And, he gets!
Dr. Fuchs revelation is really none at all. In the 1950s and 1960s, insurance companies offered Hospitalization Insurance which covered nothing related to seeing a doctor. Patients paid the doctor out of their own pocket. Doctors lived in the neighborhood and made house calls.
